Science

Introduction

Science is an integral part of our modern world. Here at the Sacred Heart Drogheda we offer all students the opportunity to study Science at Junior Cycle and our Leaving Certificate students can choose the three science subjects, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

There are five Science Teachers : Ms Dempsey, Ms Shanahan, Ms Devaney, Ms Teeling and Mr O'Sullivan.

We aim to foster a love for discovery and curiosity in each of our students. These life skills can be explored further during our Transition Year Science programme. Students can participate in the BT Young Scientist and Scifest competitions.

Junior Cycle Curriculum

1st - 3rd Year

The Junior Cycle classes consist of a maximum of 30 students per class and are mixed ability.

Higher Level and Ordinary level are taught together.

The timetable consists of two single classes and one double class per week in First and Third year and one double and two singles in Second Year.

With the introduction of the New Junior Cycle (students who entered 2016/2017) a terminal Common Level examination that occurs at the end of third year. There will be two classroom based assessments, one in second year and one in third year.

Core Syllabus: Old Junior Certificate Science Syllabus

This is divided into three sections.

In biology students will study the following topics: The Cell sand the Microscope, Food, Digestion, Respiration, The Heart and The Circulatory System, The Excretory System, Plant and their structures, Photosynthesis, Ecology, Microorganisms and Reproduction.

In Chemistry the students study Atoms and Elements, Chemical Bonding, Metals, Water, The Atmosphere, Solutions and Mixtures.

In Physics the students study of Measurement, Density, Heat, Sound, Energy and Electricity.

Junior Certificate Examination:

Classroom, Project Based Examination:

Coursework A

Their experiment copies are 10% of their final grade. This is completed over the course of their 3 years studying Science.

Course Work B

Dates:                   October – April

Students complete two classroom investigations each worth 12.5% of their JC examination.
