Home Economics
Home Economics involves the study of many different topics including nutrition, diet, foods, food processing, additives, microbiology, food safety & hygiene, food legislation, consumer studies, resource management, sociology and textiles. There is much practical work incorporated into the course including cookery, food preparation, cookery assignments, handsewing, machine sewing, embroidery, knitting, cross-stitch, applique, quilting and patchwork. We have two kitchens in the Sacred Heart. Only 20 students are present in each Home Economics class. There are two Home Economics teachers, Mrs. Martin, and Ms. Moore.

The third year Home Economics students hand up their craft projects for assessment for their Junior Cert exam each year. Each student makes a craft item using a variety of crafts including knitting, cross-stitch and patchwork. This craft project makes up 15% of their Junior Cert result. During April the Junior Cert. Home Economics students presents their craft projects to the examiner for marking. They also complete their practical cookery examination in school, where each girl cooks a dish in the presence of an examiner.
The Transition Year students complete their very own hand-made quilt during the school year in Home Economics class. Along with their teacher Mrs. Martin, each student designs and stitches their very own quilt which is a wonderful achievement. They are put on display on parents' night at the end of May.
