School Curriculum
About our school
The range of subjects available in this school is sufficiently broad to cater for students of varied academic ability, but all subjects on the curriculum are not offered to each student – it is our policy to gear the choice of subjects to suit the ability of each pupil. Similarly, the choices offered vary depending on the availability of teachers’ time and student’s needs.
JUNIOR LEVEL
All students take Irish, English, Mathematics, History, Geography, Religion, Physical Education, C.S.P.E. (Civil Social & Political Education), S.P.H.E. (Social, Personal & Health Education), Business Studies and Science. Our modern languages include French and Spanish. One of the following is selected – Musicianship, Art & Crafts and Home Economics.
Transition Year is an optional year taken by some students after completing their Junior Certificate. During this year the students get opportunities to explore a wide range of subjects and are provided with the chance to use their initiative. Transition Year helps develop maturity and leaves the students well prepared for the Leaving Certificate programme.
SENIOR LEVEL
Choices for senior level are made in third year – they depend on the student’s record or progress during the junior cycle and teacher’s advice, not on the results of the Junior Certificate. Core subjects include Irish, English, Mathematics, a modern language.
Religion and Physical Education. Students select 3 additional subjects from: History, Geography, Accounting, Business Organisation, Economics, Home Economics (Social and Scientific), Music, Art & Crafts, Chemistry, Physics, Biology. The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP) and Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) is also offered.
Extra curricular activities include Choir, Gaisce, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Creative writing, Student Representative Council, drama and many sporting activities.
