Work experience

Work experience is an important part of the year. Students spend one week in November and one week in February on work experience. The students themselves arrange this placement.

The aims of this aspect of Transition Year are to:

  • Develop an understanding of work in terms of its structures and processes;

  • Promote development and appreciation of social skills required;

  • Develop skills related to finding work such as preparation of a CV, job search strategies, job applications, interview techniques, etc

  • To help with deciding on a possible career path when leaving school.

Class Bonding Trip

The Transition Year class goes on a 2-day class bonding trip at the beginning of each academic year. Previous trips have been to Tanagh Adventure Centre and Carlingford Adventure Centre. The girls will get to know each other better over these two days and have to work together and to trust each other. Here is a sample of what they would be doing:

  • Challenge course

  • Raft building (survivor style competition to win parts to build a raft and then race it!)

  • Night walk in the forest

  • Mud slide

  • High ropes activities

  • Rock climbing

  • Mountain Biking

TY Mock Trial

On Friday May 7th the TY's set off for Cavan Courthouse at 8am, accompanied by Ms.Lynch and Ms.Austin. The one and a half hour bus journey allowed the witnesses and barristers get in some last minute practice. After "Judge James" welcomed everyone, the first trial of the day got underway. The Sacred Heart faced St.Pat's Boy's School, with our girls defending an accused murderer Frankie Huntington. After intense cross-examinations the jury returned a split verdict. However, the Sacred Heart were deemed to be the winners after the Judge used a points system.

In their next trial against Ballyshannon, the girls again came out on top. The final saw the Sacred Heart once again compete against the boys from St.Pat's. As with the first encounter, the jury again returned a split verdict. The outcome was decided by adding up all the points won by each team throughout the day. Unfortunately, the TY's lost out by ONE point. Although slightly disappointed the girls gained much experience and enjoyed a great day out.
