Curriculum

Transition year is an optional year offered to students after completing their Junior Certificate. The Transition Year Programme promotes the personal, social, vocational and educational development of student.It provides a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with the JuniorCertificate to the more independent learning environment associated with the senior cycle.
It encourages
personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. Transition Year fosters academic achievement as students prepare for a Leaving Certificate programme, further study and adult and working life. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.

Core Curriculum

The core subjects from Junior Certificate are continued along with some new subjects. Subjects are explored in new ways with emphasis being placed on group work, project and research based activities and self-motivated study. The following are the core subjects undertaken:

  • Art: Sketchwork & painting
  • Mini Company: Set up and running of a company
  • Career Guidance: Introduction to colleges & career investigation & CV creation
  • Computers: Microsoft Office Specialist Certification in Word & PowerPoint
  • Craft: Patchwork & Quilting, with a hand crafted quilt being the final product
  • English: Drama, debating & coursework
  • European Studies: Research on EU structure & countries
  • Environmental Studies: Study of countries, culture & local environment
  • French: Grammar & development of oral skills through various activities
  • Gaeilge: Trath na gCeist, Irish culture, customs & traditions, grammar & oral skills
  • Maths: Development of mathematical skills 
  • Music: Song writing & song recording and music theory
  • Physical Education: Modules of a variety of sports and tournament organisation
  • Religion: Organisation of school Mass, Investigation of religious topics
  • Science: Cosmetic science, forensic science, science of sport. option of Young Scientist exhibition
  • Spanish: Development of grammar & oral skills
  • SPHE: Social & personal development of student
  • Young social innovators: Exploration of social issues & innovative responses
