Mentors are 6th Year students who apply to be a mentor prior to commencing 6th Year. The role of a Mentor is to support 1st Year students in their transition from primary school to secondary school.
A Head Mentor is appointed to lead the mentor programme. 30 Mentors are appointed to look after the 1st Year students and the new students in various year groups.
Mentors are allocated 5-6 mentees to look after throughout the year. The 1st Year students have a meeting each week with their Mentor. This meeting is an opportunity to get to know their Mentor, the other Mentees in the group, and also discuss any issues or concerns.
Bonding activities are organised by the Mentors and held every few weeks to allow the students spend time with the other First Year students outside their mentor group.
A Mentor is someone who can make a huge difference in a First Year student’s experience in the Sacred Heart Secondary School. Mentors help the students grow as a person and help them to become the best version of themselves within the school.
Having a Mentor allows 1st Year students to have a connection with the school and the school community, while also being able to make friends within their mentor group. The transition from 6th Class to 1st Year can be extremely difficult, however, Mentors help to ease the transition, giving students the opportunity to seek support and guidance.
Mentors aim to be like a big sister for all of the SHS First Years!
As the Mentor Leadership Team, we are really looking forward to the year ahead and getting to know all of the First Year Students.
